"Cathedral Rock" --- Sold

I took many photos in Sedona AZ. It is a little funny I taught only still life painting at this super beautiful outdoor place. I wish I did plein air there. This is my first painting of the red rocks of Sedona from photo. Let me know you like it.

The colour is very lush and vibrant and I love the bold brush strokes. It does not have the animation though of yesterday's painting. This is the trouble with rock - it is very .... rock-like! I do prefer the liveliness your paintings normally have. Even a piece of orange is more alive than a rock, although I cannot say why. Thank you for your daily inspiration

A little hard on the edges and perhaps the atmospheric perspective could have been pushed a bit more. I feel photographs seem to reduce the effect of atmospheric effect, while a painting often enhances when this effect is pushed up a level.
What do you think, Qiang?

As beautiful as Sedona is, it would have been too hot in July (95 average temp) to sit outside and paint the red rocks. When you return in January 2014 it will be too cold (58 average temp) to sit outside and paint. See if you can find room for a plein air in Sedona in April or May, when the outdoor temperature is ideal! Your rendition of Cathedral Rock is lovely... but I was much happier sitting inside and watching you demo a still life. As magical as the red rocks.
