I really enjoyed your comments on my previous painting. To answer your question, it took me about 1 hour to paint it, but another hour to set it up. I spend more and more time to setup something interesting now. I am pretty convinced that using cool colors like blue for the focus center is hard to do. We get excited much easier when seeing warm color colors like yellow and orange. That is why the yellow vase is competing with the blue ornament for being the center.

For this painting, I am experimenting using more brush work for the background. I think it is called "vignetting". I used it a lot for portraits. It creates a contrast of realism vs. abstractness. I think it enhances the dynamic range of the painting? Don't you agree?

I like the loose brush work. You are right, it makes a nice contrast. Very nice.
I never really thought about cool vs. warm for the center of interest. At least conciously. I am going to go back through my paintings and see how often I use one over the other.

Great painting. I love your brushwork in the background and leaving the canvas to show. I also like your thoughts on the cool vs. warm.

Hi qiang,
I am starting a weekly "featured artist" review section on my daily painter blog and was wondering if you would agree to be one of my featured artists? I would display a photo of one of your paintings, give some commentary on your work - tell a little bit about you and link to your website. Would that be o.k.? If you agree can you give me some interesting points or gossip about your life? I couldn't find your e-mail address anywhere. http://www.debimcswain.com
Thank you,
Debi McSwain

This is a fun piece, Qiang. I like the simplicity of it, the quickness of it and of course the red fruit.

The Fuyi persimmons are one of my favorite treats... the taste is so subtle and the texture so luscious. Did you know that the botanical word for persimmon (Diospyros) means "food of the gods"? I guess the Greeks liked them too!

Your use of color always attracts my eye. By letting the background breathe it gives the painting more movement. Love it.

This is gorgeous. I love persimmons and the world of the senses that they represent.

Dear Mr. Qiang-Huang,
I read your bio on your blog and I like you paintings, and I like you!
I enjoyed watching the video on You-tube and if you do another one I would love to see your palette! It's fun to see how painters mix paint!
Thank you for brightening my day!
