"Roses in Spring"

We have some roses blooming so beautifully in the back yard. Song cut some and arranged them in a wine glass. In this painting I experimented quite a bit. It is not my usual dark background low key approach, and it is not high key either. I painted these roses like the way I painted portraits. I left large area in the background the toned canvas. I don’t consider this experiment a successful one. I don’t have my spot light effect, and my grays are not clean. I wanted the leaves showing more, but it didn’t happen. Anyway it is another painting day. Tomorrow will be a new day.

Our 3-man show is coming up on April 29. Rusty Jones, Bob Rohm, and I will show our paintings at Riverbend Fine Art Gallery at Marble Falls, TX. Rusty made a wonderful Youtube video to promote the show. Please click here to see it.

Thank you, Qiang, for your description of this painting as I am now painting every day, and I'm glad to hear from you that not every day's painting needs to meet our expectations and that will be OK.

We who improve are always our own fiercest critics Qiang, but from a pair of fresh eyes, this is still a superb painting, so bravo !

Love the roses in this but do feel the greenish color in the background does not set off the roses as well. Love the color of the toned canvas. Could you
paint over the green? Otherwise it is stunning.
Just got my copy of "Southwest Art" and so enjoyed reading the article about you. Congratulations!!

I love the way your center of attention is unavoidable. Everything directs your eye right back to it. I really like this! Congrats on your successes.

Qiang,
I don't understand "dirty grays", and I think those in this painting are beautiful. As much as I'm drawn to your spotlight effect, I also greatly appreciate a more subdued work, like this.
I love it.
Sincerely,
Gary.
