I did this painting for my friend Susan. I used a photo she provided. I examined the photo and found the elements to make the painting work. I documented my approaches and share the process with you via a YouTube video. I hope you like it.

"Rock and Water Study"

 

How do you manage your colors to show something looks solid? How do you use color relativity to reveal subtle changes of the local color variation? How do you handle grays to achieve rich and sophisticated color designs? To answer these questions, I did this study. 

Thoreau's House

 

This small house is a replica of Henry David Thoreau's house at the historical museum in Concord MA. I have read Thoreau's "Walden" and admired his wisdom. I wish more people understand him. The world could have been much better if more people have practiced his teaching. I used the same reference photo and painted this small house many times. On my 2nd Zoom workshop I painted this house again as a demo.

I keep on posting my out of date workshop demo images. This one is what I did in Nashville TN last November. I want to thank Jeanie Smith for organizing the workshop and thanks to all the artists for attending.

2018 will be a critical and challenging year for my art. The future is mysterious. As matter of facts, the mystery is all over. I must admit that I am a control freak.  I don't like uncertainties. However, the world is impermanent, My art will be a part of it. I am learning to be equanimous to everything. I should not worry too much about the winter. The spring will come, and the grasses will grow by themselves.

My usual workshop demo. I did this one on the last day at St Simons Island workshop. The flowers are not bad, but I really like the color relationship between the background and the white vase.

"Demo at Louisville 2017 3" --- Sold

This floral demo was a little crazy. I saw big bouquet of flowers in the studio, and directly moved it to my still life stand with adjusting its arrangement. It was very busy, full of different kinds of flowers. I only selected a few flowers and formed my composition. It was a indoor plein air practice. I did not paint everything in front of me, but selected only a few items which are interesting to me.

"Demo at Cedar Park 2017 1"

The holiday season has passed, and the year of 2017 has started. After a very short hibernating, I have moved again. My workshop at Austin (Cedar Park to be politically correct) begins today. I want to thank my wife Yuehong Song for putting this workshop together, and thanks to all the artists for attending. This workshop is a pure landscape one. I did this demo en plein air. It was cloudy when I painted. It was a challenge to paint a grey scene in a grey day.
