After several value study exercises, I carefully moving into the domain of color. My main goal is to understand gray. I opened my palette widely and involved quite a few colors I didn't use very often: Transparent Oxide Yellow, Transparent Orange, Terre Verte, Phthalo Turquoise, Raw Umber, and Ultramarine Violet to name some. I theorized models for the color gray, and I used this small painting to test my theory. But I have failed. I need to modify my theory and try again. Now my art has turned into a full blown scientific research. Do I need to write a thesis? Maybe I will.

  1. I'm enjoying your postings about your very deliberate learning strategy. I am curious to know the specifics about why this painting failed, in your estimation. Thank you for taking the time to post. I enjoy your paintings and your thoughts about the learning process.

  2. I am enjoying looking at this painting and find the movement in it (strokes, changes in color/temp/value) to be very nice. I am also why you feel that it is failed to meet your expectations. Someday when you are not short of time, it would be helpful to understand your conclusion, if you can pin point it. It is really wonderful that you are sharing your analytic skills and painting "experiments" with us. I wish MY experiments turned out so well!

  3. I also would be interested in seeing your results from studying greys. Your paintings are an inspiration and maybe because of your battles with greys, etc. are the reason why. Thanks for the look into your world.

  4. Gorgeous painting. I have no idea why you think it is failed. :D Oh and please write your theory. I can't wait to read your theory. It is surely valuable, coming from the great artist. :D (Lately, I find myself have some fun scanning my colored painting and change it into black and white on the computer program to see its value. It's very easy to see the wrong value in it when it is black and white...... This is not relate to your article at all. Sorry for my randomness. :P)

  5. You've failed to find the grays you expected to find? Is that what you mean with "I have failed"?

What theoretical approach did you use as an approach in finding your greys?

It's good to think out loud about things like this, so thanks for sharing

  6. Hmm. Agree with the above comments. Curious why you think this is not successful. Really like the color harmony and I can not see a reason to not be happy with this piece. Love the subtle orange reflections on the objects.
