"Sweet Mirage"

Now the holiday season is over. I am back to my cubicle babbling technical jargons. This is the last painting I did from my holiday break. It will be sent to a gallery show. I keep the background rough deliberately. Do you like it? My paintings recently are kind of tight. I am going back and forth, looking for my balance point. Sometimes, tight paintings are good, but I prefer looser styles.

  1. I prefer loose as well. I like the unfinished background.

  3. This painting is stunning. The light travels through the painting with such glory. Congrats on the OPA signature member. You deserve it. I hate to even make a comment because it is just a personal preference that I like the Quiet Festivity background more. It seems to hold my eye right in the painting more. Both paintings are so marvelous.

  4. Very nice painting! If I had to choose I would chose the Quiet Festivity background. But, I like the loose background on this one, too, but maybe with less value contrast? For me, it's "light/dark" shifts distracts a little bit from the focal areas. It's only one opinion..still an amazing painting!

  7. Congratulations Qiang on your OPA membership--well earned!

I love both these paintings, for different reasons, of course. I think the subject and color ask for different styles. You let them speak to you and your brush spoke back--is this not true art?

  8. This one is great! I think that the loose background adds a lot of energy.

  9. Oh, wow! The Quiet Festivity is so dramatic, lovely. Sweet mirage is so full of energy. Hard to pick a favorite. The tiniest critique are the white edges in the corners of Sweet Mirage .. sort of pulls my eye there. Could be just on the computer. They are both exquisite! Congratulations on the OPA signature membership.

  10. I still have this idea you brought up ...of painting things "too big" rattling around in my brain. I love how you've "backed out" on recent work, I hope to do the same with my new still lifes in 2010.

  12. you are one of my idols re painting. everything you do is beautiful, tight or loose. I like the serenity of the tight but I also like the loose because to me it conveys how manifestation comes out of no-thing, out of chaos and so you experience the chaos, then rest on that gorgeous red fruit.
