This gallery painting took me two days. Violin is a difficult to paint. It is delicately made and it keeps tell me: Keep your big wishy-washy brush away. It is really a balance issue to know how loose I can go, especially with the objects like a violin.

I did this painting last year. I look at it yesterday, and I saw lots problems. So I got the same setup, and paint on the top of old painting. It looks much better now I think. If we keep practice, our art will improve day by day.

This painting is a gallery piece. It is based on a composition I did before. I did this one before my workshop at Austin. By the way the workshop turned out successfully. Many thanks to Carl Canga for organizing and video taping, and Craig Newswanger for providing the studio space and high voltage lightning show. Later on I will have some new painting videos to show when it is ready. Especially I want thank all the artists who participated the workshop. I hope you have benefited from those two days hard work, and your art will shine and this world will be more beautiful because of your contribution.

These radishes are from our back yard. I like the rosy color and the shapes of the leaves. Painting leaves is challenging to me, but it is fun.

I painted this relatively large painting a couple of days ago and started to see that my small studies really helped me to improve my skills. I know the progressing process has no end, but I find the daily painting practice provides me a controlled way, such that my pursuing art becomes a systematic approach. It is getting more and more scientific.

One of my favorite landscape artists is Calvin Liang. I really like his way of using color. This painting is my experiment of using Calvin's landscape color scheme into a still life painting. I hope this approach can work.

I really enjoy painting the reflection of the pear on the small steel dish. It is amazing that human brains can identify real life objects from the arrangement of abstract shapes.

I would like announce and congratulate the winner of my abstract painting I posted on April 2, is Mr. Omar Moreno in San Antonio, TX.

Now I am back to realism again. As a matter of fact I did this painting the same day I did the abstract. I was preparing the demo for my workshop. I often think the realism paintings are also abstract too. We are painting just shapes, value, and color. We don't have to put names on them.

"My Workshop Depute"

April 4 and 5, I did a painting workshop at Conroe, TX near Houston. I was quite nervous at the beginning since this is my first one. But I got relax pretty quickly. People in the workshop were so supportive and friendly. I had wonderful two days and hope all my new and old friends in the workshop had fun as well. I feel especially grateful to artist Pat Meyer for initiating and organizing this workshop. She spent significant amount of time and effort to advertising and taking care of the logistics. I enjoyed sharing the knowledge I acquired from my teachers to all artists and art lovers and hope you all in the workshop enjoyed it too. In the future, I will teach more and I will have you all posted.

When I was painting this one, I thought about how I got started to be an artist. It was 9 years ago. I have just moved to Austin a few months ago and working as the first employee of a high-tech startup company. I got an email mentioning there would be a seminar in a downtown gallery; a curator of an art museum would talk about art works showing in the museum. I didn’t do any art at the time but were always curious what was showing. After work, I went to the seminar, which was located in a gallery right in downtown Austin. It was surprise to me that the place was deserted. Only two audiences came and I was one of them. The art showing there I was utterly clueless. I saw a piece of plaster with some fuzzy curves on it, and several pieces of photographic emulsion with some unidentifiable patterns on them. The talk started. The curator eloquently appraised these art pieces and explained how marvelous they are, but I did not understand him at all and confused completely. The talk lasted about an hour and I felt insulted and angry. “Is that art?” I was asking myself. I left the gallery and made up my mind: “I will be an artist, a different kind!”

This is true story on this April fool’s day.

You can tell I am still experimenting with different background colors. I test using yellow today. I sort of like it. It gives me a feeling of sunset as painting landscapes, so I call it "dusk".

I don't know the name of this flower. It is blooming in the bushes in my front yard. I like to paint flowers, but so far I have not figured out a controlled way to do it. My mind goes blank when I start. I simply follow the painting wants me to do. You know what, the painting process itself is my best teacher. It tells me what is needed. I just follow the order. If i don't give up, the painting will turn out OK at the end.

It is the most beautiful time in Texas now. If you have a choice, pack up and drive down, leave the cold and dreary mood behind. I saw this year's fresh bluebonnet at Rock Port TX last week. I took quite a few photos. This is my first small painting from a photo. Well, if you cannot escape the cold weather. Hanging in there my friend, the spring is just around the corner. I used to live at New Hampshire, and I know the feeling. I hope my painting can bring a small part of Texas to you.
