Louisville KY is my first US city when I came from China. That was 32 years ago. I was so happy visiting and teaching at Louisville again. I want to thank Katie Burke for organizing this workshop, and Suzanne Dougherty for offering her lovely home for me to stay. Many thanks to many artists for coming and painting with me. This is the first demo I did.

"Demo at Cary 2017 3"
When I was preparing for this workshop, I found that I was in short of canvases to use, and the time was not adequate to order more. So I made a few oil primed panels myself. I got a piece of masonite from the Home Depot, then coat a layer of PVA, and a layer of oil ground from Gamblin. I want thank Mark Boedges for teaching me how to make this panel. This was my first time using this home made panel for my still life. It worked fine.

"Demo at Cary 2017 2" --- Sold
This the second demo at Cary. It is a little more realistic. I used to do most of my still lives with cool light and ward shadow, but some how I have encountered more situation of the opposite. I enjoyed the beautiful cool shadow on the tea cup this time.

Backyard Habitat

I painted plein air in my backyard yesterday. The subject is a small house I built with my own hands not long ago. I have been experimenting living off-grid. The small house is powered by two solar panels. I have camped in it a few times. It was a cloudy day. So the light is cool and shadow is warm. I know this principle theoretically, but I didn't observe this until recently. It is not that obvious, but it is true.

I have plein-aired a few days, but I have to come back to deal with my "priorities". There is no way out you know, it is just a part of life. Now this painting is another demo I did at my Huntsville workshop. I know very well, my demos are very predictable, but have you noticed I have some very slow improvements? Demo for teaching and learning, that is mode I have adapted. I do not have a specific goal for my art journey. Let's drift along, like a winding brook.

"Arch Way of Laguna Gloria"

Painting is always compromised to all other so called "important" priorities, such as doing the taxes, fixing the toilet in the master bedroom, or calling the insurance company to check if they cover the next doctor's visit. Life is such an agony and insignificant stretch of time if we are driven by "priorities". No matter hell or high water, I throw all my gears into my broken backpack, I went to plein air painting today.

The brass object was from Saudi Arabia. I like the structure on the upper part of the handle. I don't know why. I really enjoy like detailed mechanical parts on a metal objects.
