Paint with me in Italy
I am very excited for this opportunity of going to Italy this summer. We have planed this wonderful trip to Fiesole and Florence from May 23 to May 31. This will be small group. I will share my plein air painting approach and provide specific guidance to help you to improve your art. Besides art classes, we will enjoy more other cultural activities as well. At this moment, we still have a few openings. Please visit: Landscape Painting in Italy with Qiang Huang for detailed information and signing up. Thank you.

"Demo at Scottsdale 2017 1" --- Sold
I feel great and honored for teaching at the Scottsdale Artist School again. I have a relatively large class with 18 people from all over. I want to thank SAS and all the artists for coming and painting with me. It is my first demo. I got more and more abstract nowadays. I need to be careful not moving from loose to sloppy.

Another plein air painting. I feel this one is not as good as the previous one, but I surely learned a lot. I have realized how much I don't know about painting natural subjects, such as bushes, rocks, waters and so on. I feel more comfortable with objects with regular forms, like apples and oranges, but most of objects I deal with theses week have irregular forms. Give me some time, I will get there.

This is interesting. My mind is telling me: "You thought you know how to do it. Guess what, you don't." That is true. My today's painting didn't come out as I want it to be. In other word, I still do not have a control on my rose paintings yet. I am humbled even more. I will analyze what is going on. At least at this moment, I know, (maybe that is my advise to you as well): DO NOT listen the news when you paint. I will sell this painting cheap.

Red rose is always difficult. So I don't paint this kind very often. It is hard to vary the value to make the red go brighter without losing its vibrancy. Even photographing the red rose painting is difficult. I have a feeling that the digital cameras do not show the variation of red well. I can't tell the difference among pink red, cadmium red, and orange red from the photo. The painting looks a way better than the photo.

So many artists want to paint looser. I do too. However, before you loos up, you must know how to make a tighter painting work. At least I think so. Painting is no gimmicky, and I don't really consider the significance of being talent, because I don't believe I have one. Painting is hard, but I am willing to bite the bullet.

Observing my previous 5 rose studies, I have seen that the integrity of those flowers gradually fallen apart. I didn't know what has happened, and I didn't even know this is happening until I did this one. Many years have passed, and I did so many roses. However, I suddenly found that there is so much I still do not know in painting this relatively simple subject matter. It makes me humbled even more.

When I did this study the rose was completely back lit. So I was struggling to show the translucent light effect. Using back lit for roses is new for me. I need to across this learning curve.

Yesterday was my mentoring class day. I did this painting. I did struggle a little. You know rose is a subject that does not allow me to over work. So I turned off my art mode and turned on my analytical mode. I took a photo of the painting, and compare it with my ref. photo. The comparison gives me something to try. I feel much better with the result.

Valentine's Day will come soon. I will try my best to provide a few floral paintings to you. I have been painting roses for many years, but still feel there are so many areas I need to improve. This is good opportunity, for both my business and art development. I hope you like my today's painting as well.

Recently, I have been pondering my art journey, and find suddenly that I have been running art as a business for a decade. I started selling my paintings as a "daily painter" on eBay. That was January 2007. Ten years have passed. I made some progress. I am so grateful that so many people have been supporting me. Sometimes, I hallucinated that I have got there. I have been trying new things, painted larger paintings, and gradually moved away from my daily painting discipline. I have been not doing my small daily paintings for about two years. I have tried new market for my work, but the result was not that good. Now I want to re-activate my small painting exercises again and use online bidding to sell my paintings again. I did this rose study a few days ago. I hope you like it.

I did this plein air painting as a warmup before my Cedar Park Workshop. To guarantee a high quality for my workshop teaching, I spent quite amount of time to prepare. After the Christmas holidays, I thought I have forgotten how to paint. So I went to Anderson Mill by myself, and did this study.

My last demo was a street scene. I showed a few reference photos and let my students decide which scene I should use. This one is from one of my photo I took at Xidi China. It was quite a challenge. There is too much information. I painted abstractly. It was a new experience for me.

It was so cold during my Cedar Park workshop. I did this one from a photo I took when I was at Baton Rouge last December. I tried using the Impressionist way to layout the colors.

"Demo at Cedar Park 2017 1"
The holiday season has passed, and the year of 2017 has started. After a very short hibernating, I have moved again. My workshop at Austin (Cedar Park to be politically correct) begins today. I want to thank my wife Yuehong Song for putting this workshop together, and thanks to all the artists for attending. This workshop is a pure landscape one. I did this demo en plein air. It was cloudy when I painted. It was a challenge to paint a grey scene in a grey day.

"Once Upon the Time"
This painting project has been a hard one. I have applied a major effort to keep myself painting. I must admit that there is a tremendously powerful force around me, pushing me away from what I like to do, or what I believe is right. The world around me is keeping on make fun of me, and has pressed me to a corner. I am trying to fight, but feel lonely and exhausted. I don't know this world any more, but I feel I know myself better. Trying to be normal, to be fit in the main stream, that is my problem. "Walk your own way, ignore what other people say". Easy to say, but difficult to do. I will do it anyway, stubbornly.
